Who We Are
We are a grassroots membership organization working collaboratively with tenants to build and effectively wield power to preserve and protect affordable housing in New York State.
We are…
Organizing.
Using tenant organizing as a strategy to build power, we work with tenant leaders across New York State to identify housing problems, develop solutions and devise tactics to effect long-term change in their housing conditions.
Building.
Partnering with organizations such as the Legal Aid Society, we educate tenants on their rights as renters by planning Know Your Rights workshops and other educational events for our members and allies.
Teaching.
Training and developing future tenant leaders is at the core of organizing and advocacy work. We believe that tenants most impacted by housing problems are best prepared to identify solutions and hold those responsible for creating the problems they face accountable.
Activating.
Mobilizing the movement is a key component of our organizing work. We work with tenants to develop their stories and to stand on the frontlines of struggles for housing justice and fairness. Our grassroots mobilization strategy is rooted in our commitment to base building as an effective tool to build and wield power.
Defending.
Advocating for strong housing policies at the city, state and federal level is a core element of our work. We partner with tenant leaders and housing advocates to identify policy solutions to address housing issues and concerns affecting New Yorkers.
